The woods host a wide variety of birds, some permanent residents, others seasonal visitors. They can be hard to spot but often reveal themselves through their song. In the spring and summer listen out for the fine songs of the the warblers including the Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler and Blackcap. All of these species breed in the woods building their nests within a foot of the ground, protected by the low layer of brambles under some of the trees. Year-round residents with their own trademark songs include Blackbird, Thrush, Robin and Wren. The 'Merlin' app is a great way of finding out which birds are singing as you walk through the woods.
